Whenever I show prospective parents and their children around school, I am always keen to find out what makes the child tick. In Mark’s book he talks about that sense of belonging and a quote from Peter Block which goes like this…
It gives me great delight when our children and parents feel a real part of the school – the social fabric. It may be they are a part of your school or when not talking schools, the people are a part of the organisation, whatever it is. Whilst we have the basic need for shelter and warmth, we also have a basic need to belong and be loved. This is evident in so many events. It is great when we are all pulling in the same direction with a purpose (and for each other). When mistakes are made we look, discuss and learn without blame. I have also known of organisations where this is not the case and blame is laid.
“We are a community of possibilities, not a community of problems”.
Peter Block
As we continually look at the possibilities, do so with optimism. Don’t look for change for the sake of it, but for improvements; because we want it to be better for others and/or ourselves. Making changes that make a positive difference. Make changes that support others. Seek the possibilities and solutions and do so together because it is together that we will succeed.
Keep being a community of possibilities.
