Looking back on my time as a co-opted primary headteacher to ASCL Council, I’m struck by how transformative these past two years have been. What began as an opportunity quickly became something far more profound—a masterclass in collaborative leadership and unwavering dedication to education.
The organisation is positively littered with truly brilliant people. I don’t use that phrase lightly. Walking into those first council meetings, I was immediately struck by the calibre of individuals I encountered. These aren’t just accomplished professionals; they’re visionaries who discuss, debate, and collaborate in a magnificently professional way that elevates every conversation.
What moves me most is their shared passion for the children and young people in schools and FE organisations across the UK. Every decision, every debate, every late-night working group session stems from a fundamental commitment to those we serve. These colleagues work tirelessly for the many members of ASCL, understanding that behind every membership number is someone leading an educational community, facing daily challenges, celebrating small victories, and carrying the weight of countless futures on their shoulders.
The brilliance of the connections formed has been profound. These relationships extend far beyond professional networking—they’re built on warm, welcoming natures that make even the most challenging discussions feel supportive. There’s a precision to the cause that’s almost surgical in its focus, yet never loses sight of the human element at education’s heart.
Whilst not in a galaxy far, far away, ASCL Council members truly are a positive force for good in our educational universe. They’ve reminded me why I chose education, affirmed my sense of purpose, and shown me the power of collective action when brilliant minds unite for children’s futures.
These two years have been a privilege beyond measure.
